Diverse grazing lands and strategic rotation
Ethical sourcing, flexible feedlot options, and sustainable practices
Cattle management at McLean Farms spans just over 2000 hectares of diverse terrain, encompassing native bushland and pastures; improved pastures, and seasonal fodder crops. The rotational grazing of cattle occurs across various farm locations within the Felton district, adapting to changing seasons and the availability of fodder. Yearling weaner steers, sourced from pastoral properties in Queensland and saleyards in the Maranoa and Darling Downs regions, form a significant part of our cattle acquisition strategy. Additionally, the farm benefits from its own Feedlot, providing flexibility for feedlot opportunities as needed. Upon arrival, all cattle undergo processing, with careful sorting into similar weight herds destined for various paddocks to support optimal growth.
Supplementation is a key aspect of our cattle management strategy, with grain rations stored in bins and hay provided when conditions require. The overarching goal is to align with the heavy Feeder Steer market, with any cattle reaching substantial weight classified under the Jap Ox category. Over the years, significant efforts have been directed towards the development of improved pastures, with ongoing plans in place for continued enhancements. Throughout all stages of cattle work and mustering, our approach prioritises quiet, humane practices, placing the utmost importance on animal care and welfare.
Our commitment to ethical and welfare friendly practices extends to the method of mustering, which is exclusively conducted on horseback, complemented by the assistance of well-trained cattle dogs. This meticulous and respectful approach ensures the well-being of our livestock and aligns with our dedication to responsible and sustainable farming practices.
